Cake Decorating – Project Discovery

Have fun learning and enhancing your cake decorating skills in preparation for the Cake Revue and County Fair.  We will also be practicing ways to communicate with a judge during conference judging and answering any questions regarding the Fairbook changes.

March 12th in Rice Lake at the United Presbyterian Church, 20 W Messenger Street, enter from the North side of the building.

Taught and lead by certified 4-H leaders and skilled cake decorators:  Cathy Solum, Sierra Solum, and Abigail Solum.

Have participants submit name and grade when registering.

 3 sessions: 8 am – 10 am, 10:30 am – 12:30 pm, or 1 pm – 3-pm. Pick one session that you feel fits you best.

Cost- $18.00

All supplies will be provided!!    Please bring containers to take your items home in.

A 9 X 13 cake pan or a large cookie sheet with sides would work well for your container.

You will be going home with decorated cupcakes, a small cake, and many graham crackers that you have decorated.

 

Session 1 (limit 9) from 8 am – 10 am will be geared towards grades 7th and up

We will be practicing tip work with review for beginners and exploring various decorating skills including stars, shells, leaves, borders, etc. We will be using graham crackers to practice and then applying those skills to cupcakes. You will have the opportunity to use an airbrush machine and learn to make “birch bark” frosting on small cakes.  You will also get to do one creative challenge cupcake which you will decorate with supplies given in your own way. We will practice discussing your cupcake and what you learned to a “judge”.

Session 2 (limit 9) from 10:30 am – 12:30pm will be geared towards 4th-6th grade

We will be learning and doing tip work including stars, shells, leaves, grass, borders etc. We will be using graham crackers to practice and then applying those skills to cupcakes. We will be making a small watermelon slice cake using only tips focusing on good presentation and uniformity for judging. You will also get to do one creative challenge cupcake which you will decorate with supplies given in your own way. We will practice discussing your cupcake and what you learned to a “judge”.

Session 3 (limit 9) from 1 pm – 3 pm will be geared to K-3rd grade

We will be introducing tip work, how to put together a frosting bag, and learning to pipe stars and leaves. We will be using graham crackers to practice and then applying those skills to cupcakes along with using candy and non-tip techniques. We will be making a small watermelon slice cake without using tips. You will also do one creative challenge cupcake which you will decorate with supplies given in your own creative way and practice telling the “judge” about it.
