Revue
Revue’s are pre-fair events where youth are judged face-to-face on their project. In Barron County we host a Foods Revue (Table Setting and Action Demonstration related to Foods), Clothing Revue (Sewing and Clothing), and Cake Revue (Cake Decorating).
Foods Revue
Foods Revue Information
What it is: A pre-fair event that qualifies as a fair exhibit where youth will have a face-to-face judging opportunity on how they’ve prepared a recipe.
Action Exhibit: Select food activity or experiment and set up as an action exhibit
Table Setting: Display a complete place setting of a meal or snack, displaying one prepared food and a menu.
Themes are encouraged!
What it looks like: Exhibitors are assigned half of a cafeteria table and will have a table tent designating where they are to set up. Exhibitors set their table setting and wait to be judged. Exhibitors may plate items safe to serve at room temperature. If entry needs to be kept cold or hot, exhibitors wait until they are “on deck” to plate their entry. A microwave is available but not a refrigerator or freezer.
How is it different from entering Foods & Nutrition entries at the fair? Entries in the County Fair are baked goods (cookies, pies, bread) whereas the Foods Revue encourages youth to cook an every day meal item. This encourages youth to learn to cook, not just bake. That said, cakes, pies, bread, etc. can be entered in the Foods Revue. The Foods Revue also provides an opportunity for face-to-face judging to get feedback to improve items before the fair.
Tips You Should Know
- Select a recipe from the 4-H curriculum or your family’s recipe collection.
- Recipes are provided in the Foods & Nutrition curriculum (Six Easy Bites, Tasty Tidbits, You’re the Chef, Foodworks, Cooking 101, 201, 301, and 401, etc.) but they are not required to be used.
- All ages should bring only one serving of one dish (except cakes!) Basically, youth can enter any age-appropriate recipe that youth want to show. Stick to something they can actually do. (ie. We don’t think Cloverbuds should be grilling).
- Officially register for the Foods Revue!
- Practice making the food or decorating the cake more than just the once for the event. It is meant to help you learn a skill, and that takes practice.
- Decide what dish you want to show for Foods Revue and practice it a couple of times a month leading up to Foods Revue.
- Make that cake for a birthday ahead of Foods Revue so that you have practiced, or at least practice on other cakes throughout the year using the technique(s) ahead of time.
Checklist for the Foods Revue – Place Setting
- Please bring the following:
- Food item, prepared by exhibitor with minimal help
- For cakes, the cake is considered your centerpiece so bring the entire cake. Bring a knife and serving spatula to serve the judge one serving of the cake.
- You only bring your main dish, not the entire meal, and just a single serving. Might want to bring an extra serving in case chaos happens while plating, but overall, you are only showcasing one serving – this teaches about serving sizes as well.
- Bring a table setting (also known as a “cover”).
- Align your tablecloth or placemat so it is straight and even on the table (for young kids, have them sit under the table so they can see all the sides at the same time and make adjustments easily).
- All silverware and main plates should be 1” from the front of the table. (for a quick measure guide, use the distance from the knuckle of your thumb to the tip of your fingernail).
- Only set the table using the silverware that is needed for your dish. If it is finger food, don’t set silverware out.
- Don’t forget a centerpiece related to your food item and theme
- Use a shorter centerpiece. You won’t want your centerpiece to be a problem while having a conversation with someone on the other side of the table. Keep it shorter or less bulky so you don’t have to talk around it.
- Create a menu for your meal
- Think about including the different food groups in your meal and adding color (if your main dish is orange, don’t choose carrots and sweet potatoes to go with it).
- Bring a copy of the recipe
- Some judges prefer to see the menu and recipe in the kids’ writing, others want it typed. Either way, kids should be the ones to put these together. Voice to text is an option for younger kids to type things out. Kids have enjoyed adding clip art and such to their menu to make it look fun and learn some computer skills in the process.
- Food item, prepared by exhibitor with minimal help

Clothing Revue
What is the Clothing Revue?
The purpose of the 4-H Clothing revue is to Clothing Revue participants get the opportunity to show the clothing they
have made, upcycled, or purchased. Check your county fairbook for specific details in each county. Special Awards may
be given.
**at the fair, your clothing is judged on how well it is made, at the clothing revue–it is on how well it looks on the person.
● Youth will wear their outfit and accessories to show to a judge.
● Youth will write a description about their outfit, which will be read while they showcase the outfit for a judge.
● Youth will then talk about their outfit with a judge and receive constructive feedback on the overall look from a
judge. (see judging sheet for criteria).
What can I make? Clothing Exhibits include items such as: skirts, dresses, tops, shorts,
pants, coats, etc. that you made from a pattern or designed yourself. (please see your
county fair book for a full list of items.). Outfits must be sewn by the youth participant.
What is a modified/upcycled outfit? This is a purchased outfit that you have made
significant modifications to. It might be something you cut apart and put back
together. Something you added too. It must look significantly different.
Why can’t I find all of these options listed for my county? Each county updates their
fairbooks at different times and in different ways, and with different criteria. If it’s not in your fairbook, we’re sorry.
*Outfits will be worn for the judge, Items are scored on the overall look, including accessories — please see judge sheet
and fair book for additional information.
